Thoughts From the Cake Club

Finally to the sleeping sleepers sleeping down on the lower road.

Good on you pulling over if you're too tired to make it to your destination without falling asleep. I'm glad you pulled over and slept.

Jam is our Jam

It rains. Over the soundtrack of  The Hobbit I can hear the rain hitting the front walk. It sounds good. All of it.  It's a flash in the pan but we'll take any moisture we can gather. I collect what I can any way I can, including barrels, which I just emptied this morning. So it will be good to refill. I'm glad I didn't water today. The hügelkultur has been holding the moisture in well this year and the ground is moist, and the plants are full and lush.

We can be found in Algoma this year once again on Sundays. Our hours are 10-2 and we love knowing you're coming to meet us. We love those who travel far or wander on foot to find what we've baked for them this week. This year our focus is on jam. Our motto is "Jam is my Jam" and we've been jamming to some amazing jams this summer as we jam. Jam on my friends.
As you may or may not know that we went to full cake club in 2020. We have three simple things we abide by in order to join.
  1. Bring Good Vibes - Have them when you arrive. Don't arrive grumpy and expect us to fix your vibes. Your body, your vibration. Next.
  2. Love Cake - it's pretty simple, who doesn't love cake? You'd be surprised how many people have terrible things to say about cake, instead of owning their own toxic eating habits and daily choices. Next.
  3. Kindness everywhere always - Even when no one is looking. Kindness is King now. Cash took a step down. If you can't be kind, we don't have cake, it's that simple. Next.

Cake Season Begins!

Picture
This year's recipe is gritty. Hands down, life got harder, but parts of it also got sweeter and that made the good parts stand out even more. We translated this by adding superfine sugar I ground myself to prevent consistency. A dash of sea salt that will give you the sensation of having been sailing early in the day. A delight to not only your palate, y los ojos. Included in some rolls is a dash of flashy edible glitter to give you the magical surprise you didn't know you needed.

She always keeps us guessing with her flavors, textures and  hues. We're playing , but we're dedicated not to stray away from the things that make her taste so delicious. And why is She a She? Because she is round and births many ideas. One of our ideas was to to stick with the delicious ingredients that make her taste so yummy. We avoided fillers, but I still do love to throw in a container of marshmallow fluff to the recipe from time to time.

Lemon is skinnier, chocolate is fatter, pumpkin is moistest, brownie is hardest but hands down... all are delcious frozen, thawed or microwaved. Warmed for 17-24 seconds in your microwave can turn a frozen dessert into a lava cake.

Your cake is always your choice. Our selections are recommendations only. For every cake that is ordered, even the custom creations, we bake 3. One is for You and the other two go into the cake freezer case for local sale. We absolutely will continue to offer delivery 24 hours, anywhere, anytime. We have even visited Washington Island, as long as the ferry fee and fuel is covered, we will go anywhere to deliver Door County's five star deliciousness.

"Meet Me in Algoma"

We were always aware that the farmer's market on Sundays would come fast and go by swiftly. We are at the farmer's market mid point of the season. They are calling for rain tomorrow and my oven is broken. Thankfully the bakery freezer is packed full of everything we baked for you this summer. It won't last forever, but it allows us to pull out your favored menu items on demand. I will work on menus for Fall and Winter  and delivery begins once again.

This year we explored many different flavors at the market. We put our Fair Ribbons to the test by offering everything that ribboned for sale in Algmona. The fan favorites this year were the Door County Cherry Meringues and the artisan bread selection. Cookies have been a fan favorite in every room, so we'll continue baking cookies once the oven's fuses are all replaced!

Note to Self: Even though Self Cleaning is tempting, don't do it, it's a trap and your oven will break!

It's lovely to have a break from baking and to think, plan and prepare for the Festival Boxes we begin shipping in November (date to be determined). I am personally looking forward to  baking season this year as it was the first time I didn't feel like throwing in the whole towel and quitting.
So, coming soon will be the Seasonal Flyer and we have begun collecting orders for Winter Baking. We are limiting the number of Cloverleaf Cake Rolls to 25. Get on the list while you can before it fills. If you need an ordered delivered locally, since gas prices have become more reasonable, we will resume delivery.

Hope in '22

As we head into the third year of the pandemic we've seen our share of lower than typical sales. It's taking longer for not only supplies to arrive, but also transactions to finalize. Everything has a touch of "delay" to it. We decided since everyone was asking for their share of "Peace" that we would begin with Hope and build from there. Our newest highway banner sees us floating Hope for the travelers and locals alike to feel lifted as they speed past on their way to everywhere but here. At some point you'll want to come. You'll become curious and wonder about the farm across from the dairy who has raised a banner of Hope at the front of the Door that we all call home.

So we lift up our Hope to you in anticipation that you'll catch it too. And begin to pass it from soul to soul like precious fire to keep us warm as we head into year 3 of this thing we're doing together. Whether we're in a boat, a raft or simply bobbing along like a cheerio floating in milk, we are all in this together. Sometimes we look at one another as we stand side by side doing the same tasks in the same space and we so cavalierly think "This person isn't with me." And while in short context this may be true but for the duration we've all been walking the same ground for decades. See it. Don't see it. Acknowledge it. Or be obtuse and pretend no one else exists. Tis your walk to continue to be contrite and contrary. Or... And hear me out, seek a greater truth where at the end of the day, our weapons are cast down, our crowns are stashed and we humble ourselves for a meal.

We're hoping you'll choose supper over war every day in Door County.

Be lifted. And where you can, where you able and the willing assemble, find Hope.
Happy Holidays and all our Hope, Love, Joy... and coming soon to an earth near you, Peace.

The Philanthropic Gesture

Picture
Part of the culture and the climate of doing business in Door County is one of ongoing philanthropy. We wrote philanthropy into our original vision for the farm and what we were going to do with this beautiful parcel of land. We decided to do what we were already doing since what we were already doing was working for so many.

For those who are just tuning in we've been handing out free seeds at events and through the mail since 2017. What started as a party gesture turned into a lifestyle of seed passing in an effort cultivate a greener mentality towards Mother Earth and Her abundant gifts.

This year our seeds will travel to both new and experienced gardeners alike across this beautiful land. As the climate shifts to change, these seeds will see that healing plants with purpose find their way in the world so that even though regions changes, seeds will endure their living legacy even after we're gone.
