5 Stars on Google and what this means to us

When we set out for Wisconsin from Maryland, our list was long on the things we absolutely needed to do. One item that never even made the list was "winning", "First Place" or even "top dog". We weren't coming for any of that. Yet, due to circumstances, largely beyond our control we find ourselves holding and maintaining a 5 Star Rating on Google for the 3rd Year consecutively. We are the ONLY Bakery open until midnight in the county and we are the ONLY 5 Star Bakery in Door County. These aren't even things we tried for. It's just how it played out.
Picture

5 Stars means Open until Midnight

We plan to break up our stars into smaller stars and pass them along to those who helped tack those stars in place. For this, we have another list. And on it is you. You're the entire reason we even have any stars at all. People underestimate the significance of a starred rating on a social platform. It signifies that we interact socially with our clientele and make ourselves socially available and accountable to the public at large.

Thank You to the Following People

My family, who not only helped us weather every storm the world threw at us, also brought their labors, efforts, ideas, wisdom, knowledge, training and friends to see what we built. To see my family regularly in the daily fabric of farm life had the reward I'd hoped it would had. Thank you for swimming through the darkest waters to the other side.
My friends, clients, patients, customers and anyone else who shoved a dollar in my pocket when I wasn't looking. I took your money and invested it for our future. Stayed tuned, I think this is just getting good. I pinky swear to continue practicing stewardship and seeing how far high we can fly this big bird.

And finally

To our partners. Who through thick n thin, through legalization and prohibition. From unjust laws against plants and the people who love them. May we see the day of freedom approaching. We stand beside our partners, through all of it. Shoulder to should, hip to hip. May they continue in their strength and not falter in the good work. Elevate tribe.
There it is. Broken down into the little bits, this is what our 5 stars look like to us. It's not all rainbows and sunshine. It's asshole tourists who are shitty over the phone. And the flipside is lovely patients who want nothing more than to feel better. We seek the balance but at the end, it's the patients who tip the scales for us in the daily. Those tourists can literally kiss my 5 star ass.

Sacred September on the Horizon

Picture
September in Wisconsin marks the beginning of the Harvest Season. This September we've set aside for our patient clients to come and visit Cloverleaf Farms.

We will be welcoming guests to the farm for private tours, experiences, cooking demos and of course so much food! Our guest room is ready and we are staged for a lovely harvest season.

Our Cake Club will continue to operate as usual, but the Meadow Maze tours will pause until October. This will give us a chance to focus on our visitors during this most sacred of seasons.

We look forward to your happy occasions, special events and private affairs. We love your creativity and vision for your events and look forward to helping you execute with amazing cakes.

Happy Harvest,

Marihemp & Paul Shields

Thank you for finding us!

Dear Door County Travelers,
We knew you'd find us. Because you are adventurers. You are travelers. You are wanderers and you are seeking gems to be found. We laid a clear trail to our front door, now it's up to you to make it the rest of the way.
Last year, when everything in Door county was closed you still called. You still came. And you still dropped by to see what we had that was good. This year, we have more. We secured a freezer from Hansen Foods to house our Swiss Cake Rolls, to take with you wherever you are headed. We maintain an inventory of Grab and Go frozen Holiday Cakes in various popular flavors.
We will begin shipping cakes again in November when temperatures throughout the country are more cooperative.(?) We will begin shipping cookies around then as well and you see more items available as temperatures drop.
In the mean time we are in full swing of summer cake season. You ARE calling us for your special occasion cakes so if you haven't called yet to discussion your occasion, 920-256-0705. We prefer you give us several weeks notice, but a minimum of 3-5 days is required for most custom special occasion cakes.
Thank you for your comments, reviews and most of all... the Love. Keep the orders coming. We love to see you putting something sweet to your lips and smiling.

Happy Summer!
Marihemp & Paul

A Journey of Art

We began a mutual exploration of art as soon as we moved in together. Stuck in a third-floor apartment with a spectacular view, I was painfully aware that we weren’t destined to stay in that apartment. I felt the pull to leave as soon as I moved in. I wanted to take it with me when we went, so I asked Paul to paint the view. Our view was of the Rumsey Island waterways that flowed in from the Chesapeake Bay. Next to the shore was the community pool. It was truly a lovely view.  So with that, we both began to paint.

Picture

First came the view painted by Paul. Then came the blood moon painted by me. Back and forth we painted endless canvases and passed the artwork out into the community as fast as our brushes could move. I donated a painting of the library to the library I would one day teach sewing. It hangs on the wall there.

My first sale was a private sale which took me by surprise. I didn’t start painting to sell my work. My personal reasons had more to do with trauma, healing and a need to explore color for a season. I had immersed myself in all things art for a season. Previously I had explored art through music, gardening and baking. I loved playing with sugar and making it look dazzling. I hadn’t really played with colors on canvas and I didn’t understand the nature of painting.

This was my study session, my practice piece. This was the craft of pulling a vision from my brain, grabbing tubes of color and making them somehow match in a tangible way. It was like birthing a vision. Most things that I painted was while looking at a guide image. Or seeing a vision that struck a chord within me and to translate it to canvas in an appealing way. When the offer came, I was stunned. I had no idea my worth. What was my time worth to me? How long had I thought about it? How long had I mulled the vision in my head over and over until I had no other choice but to regurgitate it onto a canvas until it haunted me no more.  It didn’t take long to create. Creating isn’t even the difficult part. The difficult part is the vision. But once the vision is solid, the paint, brushes and inspiration just sort of take over. What exactly is that worth? I couldn’t even begin to guess. I settled on a sum that felt “not greedy” but would fit into my budget without feeling as though I’d suffered a loss. I do not feel as though I suffered a loss selling it. As a matter of fact, the opposite. I feel like it was set free.

Picture

Fast forward to now and we are back to painting once more. This winter gifted us a lovely opportunity to take our art into public. And it had a little lifting effect. We prepared a piece to take with us to finish while we displayed at a local vendor show. We even prelisted it for sale here before we left in case anyone was haunting us secretly just waiting to buy our art. LOL Anyway, on our way out the door I grabbed the Santa hat and when Paul sat down to paint, I slipped it over his glorious silver hair. He was known as the “Painter in the Santa hat”. The local paper paid a visit to our booth and by Thursday, pictures of Paul the Painter were being passed around online.

Picture

Since we reintroduced the palette and easel back into our world life has been just a little more colorful. Jokes are funnier, brownies chocolatier, kitties softer and the kisses a little sweeter.  It’s amazing what a couple of tube of color and some brushes can do when building a new world. To my fellow artists, aspiring artists and hesitant painters I say… Pick up a brush, get some tubes of color. It’s time to start squishing!

Finding our groove...

Picture
When we soft opened our bakery a year ago, we announced our arrival in the most cheeky way possible. Having gleaned inspiration from Frank Cross of the Scrooged Universe, we decided to deliver our message of "Life is Hard. Eat Cake." in the most ridiculous way possible. When Frank terrified his viewers, he was willing to sacrifice lives to get his message across. We have a lighter look than Frank started out with but we thank him for paving the way for us to announce our opening in a ridiculous fashion.

We are a bit ridiculous. We arrived on a cold winter's day in January and couldn't even get the heat working on the farm for three days. The first days on the farm were hard. Life was hard. And it stayed hard for a long time. As the clock wound around and the calendar flipped through the seasons we found ourselves in the cold once again. We'd been through the hard time and now it was time for cake.

Cake is so good. Life is harder without cake. Monarch Marie Antoinette would be lambasted by critics over comments concerning cake. She would later lose her head. While our cakes are nothing to lose your head over, we do appreciate the sentiment that a delicious cake during the cold winter months can be so soothing after a hard year. None of us gets to escape the trials the world throws at us. So why should we escape the goodness that life also has to offer. I'm thankful for cake.

Cake is experiencing a renaissance like it hasn't seen since before Bastille Day. It's being enjoyed at breakfast now, more than ever before. Cake has always been enjoyed at breakfast. These days we're simply more accepting. We're also capable of making a delicious cake that also has a conscious. A cake with a soul. Our cakes are a perfect treat at the end of a long day. They are wonderful for your large family gatherings when more cake is never enough. They are big, full of goodness and store for up to six months frozen (if re-wrapped properly).

Thank you Frank for inspiring us to reach for ridiculous heights. And thank you to our faithful, loyal friends who love Cloverleaf Farm's fine baked goods. It really is a pleasure to craft the things that will be making you smile in the years to come.
